Nkumba University Holds 24th Graduation Ceremony
This morning, the 24th cohort of graduates was released by Nkumba University in a colorful ceremony at their Main campus on Entebbe Road. A total of 1432 graduands were awarded – of which 54.6% were female and 45.4% were males. Of these, 5 were PhDs, 103 were awarded Masters degrees, 87 got Postgraduate Diplomas, 889 were awarded Bachelor’s degrees, 238 were awarded Diplomas while 110 were awarded Certificates. Nkumba University also released her very first cohort of Nursing and Midwifery students.
Before conferring the awards, Mr. Emmanuel Katongole , the University’s Chancellor, advised the graduates to be more of job creators than seekers. He reiterated that the recently launched Chancellor’s Innovation Initiative shall help to alleviate today’s job scarcity. Under CII, Nkumba University is collaborating with Innovations Village, Stanbic Business Incubator and other partners to support innovation development across all disciplines within the university.
“…Am sure that CII will lead to more startups and job employment for the young people in this country. During the next graduation, we shall exhibit some of the products developed as a result of this initiative. Hopefully, these products / services / models shall open up avenues through which our students can benefit professionally. I hope we can discover the next Steve Jobs here at Nkumba University.
…” said the university Chancellor.
Mr. Katongole iterated that the CII’s objective is to make sure there are more young people participating in the innovation eco-system and deriving more patents in Uganda. He stated that Nkumba University wants to provide a platform – more facilities and mentorship to students and alumni to experiment on ideas that will solve real-world problems. CII is the first of its kind in Uganda where the industry is being brought into academia to drive translation of ideas into innovations. He went on to promise a donation of USD10,000 towards realization of this dream.
In his submission, Prof. Jude T. Lubega, the recently installed Vice Chancellor, announced that the university shall is taking extra steps to boost its curriculum acceptance into the industry. Among these are partnering with professional bodies such as ICDL, CPA, ACCA, CIPS, Microsoft, Comptia and Pearson VUE. “…such initiatives will not only nurture graduates fit for the 21st century but will transform NU into one of the best institutions in the region” Prof. Lubega excitedly said.
He also informed the public that the university is already benefitting from such partnerships e.g., the $160,000 recently granted to Nkumba by RUFORUM – a network for 128 universities allover Africa. Furth more, Prof. Lubega announced the creation of a new school – The School of Computing and Informatics.
“As I stated earlier, computing and informatics fields have transformed all sectors of society, businesses, and government. We realize this and so we have carefully reviewed the curricula to ensure that the school offers in-demand and modern computing and IT programmes. This school shall be housed at our Kampala Campus located along Kabaka Anjagala Road in Mengo…” said the Vice Chancellor.
As he concluded, Prof. Lubega encouraged students to adapt to the emerging trends within their respective industries. He further advised them to use their time efficiently, be mindful of their legacy / reputation and to always fly the university flag high.
Three awards were given to the most outstanding students at various levels. Mr. Eric Uyiwroth, a Bachelor of Commercial Art student was awarded the Palle Moeller award. This award is given to the most outstanding student based on academics, discipline and co-curricular activities. Mr. Kato Sserwada Mustafa, a Masters of IT graduate as well as staff member, was the best post graduate student. Ms. Nakalyango Violet was the best at Bachelor’s Level with a 4.6 CPGA while Ms. Lamala Juliet emerged best among the Diploma students.
