The Chancellor is the titular head of the University. He presides at all ceremonial assemblies of Nkumba University and in this name, confers degrees and other academic titles and distinctions. The Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the University Council.
Prof. Gordon Babala Kasibante Wavamunno (born 16th December 1943), is a globally respected and distinguished Ugandan entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and statesman – who is also reported to be one of the wealthiest people in the country. Prof. Wavamunno has an honorary doctorate degree from Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest institution of higher learning, and from Nkumba University too. He is also a professor in business and entrepreneurship at Makerere, and has sincerely proved himself to the world as an entrepreneur from practice.
As of September 2013, Prof. Gordon Wavamunno had established some of the most successful enterprises in Uganda either wholly or partly owned. These are under the Spear Group of Companies: Spear Motors Limited – Franchise distributor and dealer in Mercedes Benz, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Deutz Fahr brands in Uganda, Wavah FM – a private radio station, Star Times Digital Satellite Television Service – a digital satellite distributor of television signals in Uganda, Spear House – an office building on Jinja Road in Kampala’s central business district, Wavah Water Limited – a manufacturer and distributor of drinking mineral water in Uganda, GM Tumpeco Limited – a manufacturer and fabricator of steel products, including number plates, traffic road signs, and billboards. Also, furniture, spring mattresses, uniports, wheelbarrows, and truck and bus bodies, Fancy Furniture Limited – Importer and distributor of high-end office and household furniture, Wavah Books Limited – A publisher of school text books and other writings, Nakweero Mixed Farm – A diary, beef, and crop farm in Nakweero, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
Prof. Gordon Babala Kasibante Wavamunno has been serving as the honorary consul of Hungary to Uganda for several years. In January 2013, Wavamunno was appointed Knight of the Order of Saint John in recognition of his philanthropic work with St. John Association of Uganda, where he has been a member since 1983. He currently serves as the chairman of the St. John Association.
Prof. Gordon Babala Kasibante Wavamunno has been the Chancellor of Nkumba University since 2011 to date. He has diligently served the University in his capacity as the Chancellor for approximately 9 years now. He has seen the University grow every year into a place where students can experience being part of a non-denominational, non-secular and culturally diverse community from all-over the world. The Chancellor has once said “I have not thought about failure. As an entrepreneur, I have vast business acumen, having built so many good businesses. With the experience I have acquired as a businessman over the years, I will apply similar philosophies that will enable Nkumba University make a mark”. This is an affirmation that he is a noble person to reckon with and Nkumba University is very proud of him.
