Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles Design

The programme focuses on training and developing a creative fashion and textile mind. High levels of practical experience are gained through interaction, theory and practical work, facilitated with up to-date technologies. A total credit load of 135 is required for one to graduate. The programme structure is as shown below.

Career Path

Here are some career path options for graduates:

  1. Fashion Designer: Fashion designers create clothing, footwear, and accessories. They work with a team of professionals to conceptualize and design collections, and oversee the production of garments.
  2. Textile Designer: Textile designers create patterns and designs for fabrics used in clothing, home furnishings, and other products. They use computer software or draw by hand to develop patterns and collaborate with manufacturers to ensure their designs are produced accurately.
  3. Fashion Buyer: Fashion buyers are responsible for selecting and purchasing clothing and accessories for retail stores or online retailers. They research trends and consumer demand, negotiate with suppliers, and collaborate with marketing and sales teams to ensure successful product launches.
  4. Fashion Merchandiser: Fashion merchandisers manage the retail side of the fashion industry, analyzing consumer trends, developing marketing strategies, and creating product displays that showcase the brand’s image and inspire customers to make purchases.
  5. Textile Technologist: Textile technologists work with manufacturers to develop new textile products, such as fabrics, yarns, and dyes. They test materials to ensure quality and durability, and develop solutions for production problems.
  6. Costume Designer: Costume designers create costumes for films, television shows, theater productions, and other performances. They collaborate with directors, producers, and actors to develop costumes that enhance the visual elements of a production and bring characters to life.

These are just a few of the many career paths that individuals with a Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles Design can pursue. Graduates can also consider pursuing further education, such as a Master’s degree or certification, to advance their careers and specialize in a particular area of fashion and textiles design.

Entry Requirements

Direct Entry Scheme

At least 5 passes at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent;

At least 2 principal passes at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

 

Diploma holders

  1. Hold a Credit or Second-Class Diploma in the relevant field from a recognized institution as determined by the University Senate.
  2. At least a Pass (50%) in Mature Entry Examinations.

Other

  1. A certificate obtained after 2 years of post UCE study;
  2. Any equivalent qualifications besides UCE and UACE.

Mature age Entry

  1. The applicant should be 25 years of age and above;
  2. Must have passed mature age entry examinations organized by the National Council for Higher Education.
