Bachelor Of Science In Guidance And Counselling

This programme is designed for students who wish to specialise in psycho-social issues and counselling special populations in institutions, health centres and well as offering pastoral health care to the sick. The programme structure is as shown below.

Career Path

Here are some career path options for graduates:

  1. School Counsellor: School counsellors work in elementary, middle, and high schools, providing guidance and support to students in academic, personal, and social areas. They help students develop coping skills, manage stress and anxiety, and make informed decisions about their future.
  2. Career Counsellor: Career counsellors work with individuals to help them identify their interests, skills, and values, and guide them towards making informed decisions about their career paths. They also provide assistance with resume writing, job searching, and interview skills.
  3. Mental Health Counsellor: Mental health counsellors work with individuals, families, and groups to address mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and addiction. They provide therapy, support, and guidance to help clients manage their conditions and improve their overall well-being.
  4. Rehabilitation Counsellor: Rehabilitation counsellors work with individuals who have disabilities, injuries, or illnesses to help them adapt to changes in their lives and achieve their goals. They provide counselling, case management, and advocacy services to help clients access resources and support services.
  5. Academic Adviser: Academic advisers work in colleges and universities, assisting students with course selection, academic planning, and career exploration. They provide guidance and support to help students navigate the complexities of higher education and prepare for their future careers.
  6. Private Practice Counsellor: Private practice counsellors operate their own businesses, providing counselling and therapy services to clients on a fee-for-service basis. They may specialize in a particular area of counselling, such as couples therapy, addiction counselling, or trauma counselling.

These are just a few of the many career paths that individuals with a Bachelor of Science in Guidance and Counselling can pursue. Graduates can also consider pursuing further education, such as a Master’s degree or certification, to advance their careers and specialize in a particular area of counselling or mental health.

Entry Requirements

Direct Entry Scheme

At least 5 passes at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent;

At least 2 principal passes at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

 

Diploma holders

  1. Hold a Credit or Second-Class Diploma in the relevant field from a recognized institution as determined by the University Senate.
  2. At least a Pass (50%) in Mature Entry Examinations.

Other

  1. A certificate obtained after 2 years of post UCE study;
  2. Any equivalent qualifications besides UCE and UACE.

Mature age Entry

  1. The applicant should be 25 years of age and above;
  2. Must have passed mature age entry examinations organized by the National Council for Higher Education.
