NKUMBA UNIVERSITY programmes

Postgraduate Diploma In Education

This is a one year programme designed to train participants in teaching of specific areas in professional development. A participant shall major in two teaching subjects to enable him/her teach at the point of specialisation.

Many first degree holders do not have teaching skills yet would like to join the teaching profession. Secondary schools in Uganda need more teachers to improve the quality of education in the country. The School of Education designed this program to enable graduates to acquire pedagogical skills to enable them to deliver quality education.

It is common knowledge that teaching in secondary schools and Primary schools is examination-oriented and therefore the learners come out with no focus on community values. The program is expected to produce graduates who are innovative and research-oriented in their work. It is expected that products of this program will approach school subject teaching geared to knowledge application rather than only cognitive
values.

Career Path

Here is some information about a Postgraduate Diploma in Education:

A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is a one-year program that is designed for individuals who have already completed a bachelor’s degree and wish to pursue a career in teaching. This program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to become effective educators.

The program typically includes coursework in education theory and practice, curriculum design and implementation, classroom management, and educational psychology. Students may also have the opportunity to complete a teaching practicum or internship, where they can gain hands-on experience in a classroom setting.

Upon completion of the program, graduates can go on to teach in primary or secondary schools or pursue further study in education at the master’s or doctoral level.

Some universities or colleges may have specific requirements for admission into a PGDE program, such as a minimum GPA or completion of specific coursework. It’s important to check with individual institutions for their specific requirements.

Overall, a PGDE can be a great option for individuals who are passionate about education and want to make a difference in the lives of young people.
