PhD in Business Administration

The PhD programme offered by the School of Business Administration at Nkumba University is by research only, which results in presenting a major thesis.  The thesis must be submitted within a minimum period of three years and a maximum of five years The candidate selects from the following areas which have been designed to enhance performance, effectiveness and institutional capacity-building in teaching, research, consultancy and professionalism in Business administration.

a) Accounting and Finance
The PhD of Business Administration (Accounting and Finance) is designed for those who already have a postgraduate background in the field of Accounting and Finance. This programme therefore assumes that the participant already has the postgraduate foundation on which to build his / her PhD research work. It is a suitable programme for those interested in the professions of auditors, accountants, financial managers, etc. in private and public sectors, including academic and research based institutions. It is offered for a period of three to five years.

b) Management
The PhD of Business Administration (Management) is designed for those who already have a postgraduate background in the field of management on which to build the PhD research work. It is a suitable programme for those interested in the professions of manager, human resource, etc. in private and public sectors, including academic and research based institutions. It is offered for a period of three to five years.

c) Marketing
The PhD of Business Administration (Marketing) is designed for those who already have a postgraduate background in the field of marketing on which to build the PhD research work. It is a suitable programme for those interested in the professions of marketing in private and public sectors, including academic and research based institutions. It is offered for a period of three to five years.

d) Banking and Finance
The PhD in Business Administration (Banking and Finance) is designed for those who already have a postgraduate background in the field of Banking and Finance on which to build the PhD research work. It is a suitable programme for those interested in the professions of Banking, Finance, Insurance, including academic and research based institutions. It is offered for a period of three to five years.

e) Management Information Systems
The PhD in Business Administration (Management Information Systems) is designed for those participants interested in both business/computer skills with the capability to process business information to meet the challenges of the changing local and global business environment. It is suitable for those who intend to have careers in both business and information technology. It is offered for a period of three to five years.

f) Other related PhD Programmes in Business Administration will cover Entrepreneurship, Organisational Behavior, Business Strategy, International Business, Procurement and Logistics, as well as Transportation and Logistics.

Career Path

Although this PhD programme is by Research only, PhD students are required to participate in training in the following Crosscutting courses: Philosophy of Knowledge (Epistemology); advanced research methods; Scholarly Writing and publication; Statistical & computer applications; and Institutional Pedagogy skills. The training in crosscutting courses is conducted in form of seminars, workshops, conferences, among others.  The training is intended to prepare the student to carry out his/her research and also to equip him/her with skills needed in conducting different kinds of research. The student undertakes cross-cutting courses during the first semester of the first academic year. The research seminars/conferences/workshops are facilitated by experienced resource persons from Nkumba University and other universities who are invited as facilitators. The School of Post Graduate studies & Research shall do the preparations and arrangements for the training workshops / Seminars / conference.
